Earth Day Activities - What are YOU Doing?

Wembley is hosting an Invention Convention during Earth week on Thursday April 23rd. Students from grade 1-6 will be asked to create a useful invention made from recycled materials and students, parents and community members have been invited to attend. 

Jessie Hamilton is having a Conservation Fair April 22nd.  It's like Science Fair, but their projects have to be created from recycled materials and be something that is designed to improve the environment. 

Monetville Public School has been asked to help the French River Stewardship Committee by taking May 26th to plant 500 seedling trees at the French River Visitors Center on Hwy.69.  The Provincial park rangers will be opening the park early just for our planting day.  The Monetville Eagles will be helping to sustain the health of the environment  and in turn the  many waterways of our area. MPS also recycles daily for the school of 88 students and 12 adults.  Although the school doesn't have a large recycling bin we have the good fortune of a dedicated teacher, Mr. Dave Mitchell who delivers a pickup truck load of recycling items weekly to the main site down the road in Monetville.   Grade 6 students and their teacher , Mrs. Colleen McKinnon pool and organize the recycling items each week.  Another teacher , Ms. Joan Fryer has a crew of composters that takes our fruit and vegetable scraps weekly to our composter bin which was in started last October.

R H Murray is having a community cleanup on April 22 as part of Earth Day. Students will also assemble in the gym to view slide shows from previous year's activities.

Larchwood Public School in Dowling is Celebrating Earth Day early this year. On Tuesday, April 21th they will be having an Earth celebration. They will be having a school wide assembly at 1:35 to show their love for the planet and that students can made a difference. Their assembly will include songs, stories, and a recycled hat parade. They will even be adopting an endangered animal. Through our the day they will be having a garbage clean up, and  competing to see which class can have the least amount of garbage in their lunches.

Lockerby will be doing clean up as well as planting their gardens.  The Students for Students Committee is planning a small fundraiser to pay for the supplies. 

Assiginack will be having a Green Day Activity day with events like a recycling scavenger hunt, recycling relay race and other events based on the three R's.

Lasalle will be having a school yard clean up and they will have accomplished their goal of providing the people in Kenya with two wells through Free the Children Foundation.  The wells will be built at two of the schools and this will afford the girls with education as they will no longer have to spend their days fetching water for miles and miles.

LoEllen’s Environmental Club will be at Market Square on Saturday at their booth informing the public of their activities and having interested members of the public sign a petition calling on the City of Sudbury, the Rainbow School Board and all other public institutions to ban the sale of bottled water on their premises.  LoEllen will also be hosting a Spring Clean-up by students during the day to clear refuse from our school grounds and also public property adjacent to the school as well as in the area of homes near the school.  There will be a booth and display in their foyer to inform students of the activities of various clubs including the L.E.P. Environmental Club, the Amnesty International Club and Students for Change / Free the Children/ Minga for Masaai.  The Environmental Club will also be fundraising by holding a bake sale featuring organic and Fair Trade foods and beverages.

To celebrate Earth Day this year, Valley View P.S. has decided to take on three separate initiatives. Our first two will be accomplished with the help of community businesses and services Carole and John Holla of Holla's Produce and Landscaping have agreed to work with them to create a flower bed in the north side of the existing building. Students in grades 5 and 6 will have input in the project.  Tina McCaffrey from the City of Greater Sudbury' s re-greening program has agreed to donate 100 seedlings to replace the trees that were damaged during the building of the new school. Students in grades 4, 7 and 8 will plant the trees.  The rest of the school will be introduced to vermicomposting to engage them in Earth Day activities.

Long Lake classes will cleaning the schoolyard and students will be planting flowers and vegetables in class to be later planted outside in the gardens.  Students are also hosting a Book Recycling Day as well as having a litterless lunch day. 

Algonquin is hosting an Invention Convention on April 22nd for Grades SK – 3 where students will be presenting a creation they have built at home from recycled materials. Parents are welcome to attend the Earth Day 2009 Invention Convention to view the projects.

At Churchill the whole school is being challenged to bring garabeless lunches.  They will also be having Earth Day dress-up colour day where everyone is asked to wear Blue, Green and Brown.  They will also have the whole school participate in a school yard clean-up.

C.R. Judd Public School will be celebrating Earth Day in a number of ways this year through the following activities:  The grade 2/3 class will help the grade 7 class to clean up the courtyard and will assist the grade 8s in cleaning up Capreol with the Lion's Club and the City of Greater Sudbury.  In May, they will continue their partnership with the Railway Museum by cleaning up the grounds.  They will be reading Why Should I Recycle? and Earth Day - Horray!  The grade 4 class will present projects in class on animals.  The entire school population will be attending Silver City on April 22nd to see the movie EARTH.  The grade 7 & 8 classes are researching the animal families in the movie EARTH.  They will make a slide show with their information.  The grade 7 class will clean up all the outside gardens at our school.  The grade 5 class will be doing a cemetary clean-up once again this year.  They will be creating art pieces using garbage and recycling from their homes.  They will be viewing a few clips on how pollution has contributed to environmental damages and write short reflection pieces to share with the class.  The grade 5s will also be writing persuasive letters to the Minister of the Environment, discussing student concerns.  Lastly, the grade 5 class will share appropriate books with the JK class during their Reading Buddies session.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will be organizing a schoolyard and community cleanup.

Northeastern will be having a GO GREEN- PAYING IT FORWARD TO THE ENVIRONMENT assembly for the whole school, then they have classes going out into the community to participate in the PITCH IN CANADA clean up your community project.
